Fish Guide Introduction

This site is expanding on a section that started out at DivingInDepth.com. For right now we have a guide to the best fish for spear fishing, but we aim to build this out!

There are many thousands of fish in the oceans around the world, but few are good to eat and can be taken by spearfishing. Rules and regulations control the types of fish that can be speared, where they can be speared, how big they must be, what time of the year they can be speared, how many (bag limit) can be taken, etc. Understanding and knowing these rules for your area is essential if you want to avoid fines and problems. In addition, conservation and ethics should be important if you want to be a spearfisherman. To be successful and conservation-minded, you must be able to identify the type of fish you want to hunt and know where it lives and how it lives. Because there are so many species, being able to identify a type of fish can be very difficult. The more you know about the fish’s habitat and how it lives, the more successful you’ll be in hunting the fish.
